A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms

The Simple Humble Humanity of Westeros

★★★★½

Arguably the best television show of the year concluded this past weekend after only six episodes. It's ironic that it's only February and the title of "best show" is already being thrown around, but it is well deserved. Focusing on the intimate, heartfelt yarn of Dunk and Egg, this latest entry into George R.R. Martin’s world is a smaller-scaled story free from heavy supernatural elements and political intrigue.

🎬 Production & Cast

Ser Duncan: Peter Claffey
Egg: Dexter Sol Ansell
Lyonel Baratheon: Daniel Ings
Baelor Targaryen: Bertie Carvel
Creator: Ira Parker
Based on: George R.R. Martin
The simple humble humanity displayed here hits even harder because it is so unexpected in the brutal world of Westeros. — Ray Manukay

What makes this show so memorable are the relationships between the two leads as they navigate a dangerous world with pure hearts. Kindness and strong morals are seldom rewarded in Game of Thrones, but this show is built on them. The series greatly benefits from the charm of its entire cast, especially Bertie Carvel as Baelor Targaryen—possibly the most affable Targaryen in history.

The story also features stunning medieval action, riveting horse riding, and brutal swordplay. While I argue it could have functioned as a three-hour movie to eliminate the "spoiler chatter" between episodes, the execution by the cast and crew reached the story's full potential in whatever form it was presented.

✅ Pros

  • Incredible chemistry between Peter Claffey and Dexter Sol Ansell.
  • Intimate, character-driven storytelling.
  • Stunning medieval action and jousting sequences.

❌ Cons

  • Extremely short runtime (6 episodes at 30 mins each).
  • The long delay for Season 2 is a "cruel wait."
🏆 Final Verdict

A masterpiece of "human interest" storytelling within a fantasy epic. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms is a heartfelt, pure-hearted journey that proves you don't need dragons to make Westeros captivating.
