The Full Review

"Director Craig Brewer returns to the music scene with his latest film, Song Sung Blue, a biographical musical drama starring Hugh Jackman and Kate Hudson. They play a married couple performing as a Neil Diamond tribute band, and the film follows their journey from local gigs to unexpected success—all while navigating a brutal personal tragedy.

Beyond the leads, the film features several fun supporting performances. Michael Imperioli is a delight as a Buddy Holly impersonator; it’s refreshing to see him play something other than a gangster. Jim Belushi also makes a memorable appearance, perfectly nailing the Wisconsin dialect. There is even an entertaining recreation of a moment featuring Pearl Jam’s Eddie Vedder.

While Hugh Jackman does a great job carrying the film, a charming Kate Hudson is the true scene-stealer. Her character undergoes a more compelling arc, and her performance is truly Academy Award-worthy. Hudson is a revelation as a vocalist, deeply impressing alongside Jackman, who provides his usual solid, entertaining vocals.

Song Sung Blue is an entertaining experience. It is a bit schmaltzy at times, but it earns its sentiment. I highly recommend it, especially as a 'date night' film or for fans of Neil Diamond. If you’re a softy, be sure to bring some tissues."
